M113 APC 1960-75 US, ARVN, and Australian variants in Vietnam

Jamie Prenatt. Osprey New Vanguard 252 2017. ISBN 978 1 4728 1746 4

Bristling with machine guns and often adorned with colourful unit insignia the M113 APC is the premier AFV associated with the Vietnam War. Designed as an air portable tracked troop carrier, it was also the basis for mortar carriers, flame throwers, command and recovery vehicles, anti-aircraft platforms, bridgelayers, and gun armed support versions used in the War by the US and its allied nations. In a country deemed unsuitable for tank warfare it was first fielded by the South Vietnamese Army whose troops found that when mounted with MGs its mobility in waterlogged and jungle terrain made it a formidable assault weapon.  Vietnam was a guerrilla war where success was measured not by territory gained but by the body count numbers, and this book recounts some of these ferociously fierce encounters in which M113s participated between the US and its Allies against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army.  There are not many English language books on AFVs in the Vietnam War and even fewer accounts of the M113.  Recommended.  Thanks to Osprey for the sample.                                                                                                                                    John Ham MAFVA.
